## What is a Michigan basement?

A Michigan basement is defined as a crawl space that has been dug out into a basement. They are earthy and damp with ceilings so short you can’t stand up straight. The floor and walls can be exposed dirt, stone, brick or cinder block and many Michigan basements have [common problems](https://www.retrofoamofmichigan.com/blog/basement-insulation-problems) with moisture, water leaks, and structural integrity.

Michigan basements are found in older homes and started appearing around the 1920’s as the economy was expanding and more storage space was needed. Today, Michigan basements are still used for storage as well as storm shelters and laundry rooms.
